With the upsurge in Chinese learning around the world, the past few decades have witnessed the vigorous development of Chinese language education in Germany.Judging from the number of volunteer Chinese teachers in Germany recruited by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation each year,around45 volunteer Chinese teachers have been appointed to Germany to teach Chinese in each of the past three years(2017 to 20 19).As one of the most important participants in the cause of Chinese language education in Germany, volunteer Chinese teachers’ cross-cultural adaptabilities greatly affect the results of Chinese language education in Germany, appealing to the exploration of the cross-cultural adaptation of volunteer Chinese teachers. With the employment of research methods including questionnaire survey,semi-structured interview, quantitative analysis and comparative analysis, this thesis probes into the cross-cultural adaptation of 110 volunteers of Chinese teachers appointed to Germany from 2017 to 2019 in line with the Cross-cultural Adaptation Theory put forward by Ward and Blake. This research is carried out from five perspectives: language adaptation, life adaptation,w ork adaptation, cultural adaptation and psychological adaptation.Four conclusions are hereby drawn in this study: First of all,the overall results of cross-cultural adaptation of volunteer Chinese teachers in Germany are satisfying with 4 8% of the subjects having no difficulties in cross-cultural adaptation.Secondly, among all the options of adaptation difficulties,"difficulties in work adaptatio" is the most frequently chosen one, with "difficulties in life adaptation" being the second,"difficulties i n cultural adaptation" the third, and "difficulties in language adaptation" the last.Thirdly, the psychological survey results demonstrate that about 3% of the subjects have symptoms of mild depression. At last, the results obtained from the analysis with SPSS software show that German proficiency, specialized subject identity, and academic qualifications have a significant impact on the cross-cultural adaptation of volunteer Chinese teacher in Germany. This thesis then puts forward several strategies to s olve the problems found in the survey on the basis of the survey data, the theory of cross-cultural adaptation and the semi-structured interviews made with a number of volunteer Chinese teachers. The strategies regarding life adaptation are to develop teac hers’ awareness of independence,to improve their foreign language proficiency, and to build a social supporting network. The strategies with respect to work adaptation are to increase teachers’ comprehension of different teaching philosophies, bring teaching resources with Chinese characteristics, and consolidate their Chinese knowledge. The strategies in regards to cultural adaptation are to familiarize teachers with German culture, lower their expectati ons, promote their interactions with others, enhance the mutual understanding, etc. All these strategies mentioned above can help the volunteer Chinese teachers in Germany to overcome the inter-cultural communicative obstacles they encounter. The First Chapter introduces the research background, research status quo at home and abroad, research purposes, methodology and methods of this thesis. The Second Chapter clarifies the specific survey items with research methods of questionnaire survey and semi-structured interview. The Third Chapter analyzes the influencing factors in cross-cultural adaptation of volunteer Chinese teachers in Germany. The Fourth Chapter explores and discusses the results of cross-cultural adaptation, and establishes a model for the cr oss-cultural adaptation of volunteer Chinese teachers in Germany. The Fifth Chapter comes up with some suggestions for the cross-cultural adaptation of volunteer Chinese teachers. Finally, the innovation and drawbacks of this thesis are presented. |
