Xu Wei’s Calligraphy Aesthetics From Yangming’s Mind Theory

As one of the main ideologies in Ming Dynasty,there is no doubt that the influential scope of Yangmingism is extensive.Relatedly,XU Wei has a close connection with Yangming’s mind all his life.What are the effects of such connection on his calligraphy? This is the purpose of this paper.Firstly,this paper combs the relationship between XU Wei and the main characters of Yangmingism,including mainly XU Wei’s attitude towards Wang Yangming and his relationship with WANG Ji,JI Ben,YUAN Hongdao and TAO Wangling.Secondly,this paper discusses XU Wei’s calligraphy literary theory under Yangmingism.Specifically,based on the brief description and summary of Yangmingism,the embodiment of the school of mind in Xu Wei’s calligraphy aesthetics is extracted and demonstrated.Then,I discuss XU Wei’s calligraphy art creation under Yangmingism,analyze and summarize the positive and negative influences of Yangmingism on Xu Wei’s calligraphy with examples of the specific calligraphy works.Finally,this paper refined and summarizes XU Wei’s calligraphy aesthetics in the context of Yangmingism,discusses the influence of XU Wei’s calligraphy aesthetics on romanticism calligraphy ideological,and provides insights for the contemporary calligraphy discipline.In general,this paper explores the aesthetics of XU Wei’s calligraphy from a novel perspective and broadens the people’s cognitive horizon of XU Wei’s calligraphy.
