| Zhao Mengjian,in the late Southern Song Dynasty,had certain attainments in calligraphy,which was embodied in the theory and practice of calligraphy."On Calligraphy" is the main idea of his calligraphy theory,which advocates the retro route from Tang Dynasty to Jin Dynasty.His calligraphy practice had different changes in different periods,which was mainly influenced by his calligraphy thoughts.Although he did not break through the influence of Shang Yi calligraphy style,his calligraphy had the characteristics of the law of Tang people,which built a bridge between Shang Yi calligraphy style and the comprehensive retro style of Yuan Dynasty.This paper makes an in-depth study of Zhao Mengjian’s calligraphy,specifically combining with relevant historical materials of him to explore Zhao his life,calligraphy origin,calligraphy thoughts,calligraphy style and his influence on later generations.This paper discusses Zhao Mengjian’s calligraphy from the following five aspects:The first part expounds the influence of Zhao Mengjian’s life,The Times he lived in and the environment of calligraphy study on his calligraphy.Among them,it discusses the calligraphic environment in detail,which shows that the calligraphic atmosphere of the Southern Song Dynasty is better from the aspects of the emperor’s preference,the flourishing of the inscription,the fashion of private collection of the normative calligraphy works and commenting on calligraphy of the literati.The second part,starting from the origin and thought of Zhao Mengjian’s calligraphy,focuses on analyzing the connotation of his theory work “On Calligraphy”.The third part studies the characteristics of Zhao Mengjian’s calligraphy techniques,respectively from four aspects of brushwork,construction,composition and the rule of using ink.The fourth part studies Zhao Mengjian’s calligraphy works in different periods and summarizes the overall characteristics of his calligraphy.Secondly,Zhao Mengjian’s calligraphy style is more clearly reflected in the comparison with the four major calligraphers in the Southern Song Dynasty.The fifth part explains Zhao Mengjian’s influence on later generations and his position in the history of calligraphy from two different aspects of calligraphy thought and practice.In a word,Zhao Mengjian is an outstanding calligrapher in the Southern Song Dynasty.His calligraphy has Ouyang Xun’s rigorous and dignified,Su Shi’s thick and beautiful,Huang Tingjian’s opening and vigorous,and Mi Fu’s calm and piquant.On the whole,it presents the characteristics of integrity and thickness,the integration of law and interest,and has a certain influence on the theory and practice of calligraphy in later generations.Zhao Mengjian is a transitional figure that can never be overlooked. |
