The 2011 edition of “Compulsory Education National English Curriculum Standards”(hereinafter referred to as the NECS)clearly claims that it is an important goal to train elementary school students such that they could master English language skills.English language skills are not only about the English knowledge,but also about the method that how to learn it,which is the foundation of English learning.However,the current situation of English language skills training in middle grades of primary schools is poor.There are two main reasons.First,there are few English classes in primary school,which is very easy to be ignored by schools and students;Secondly,it still adopts the evaluation method of summative evaluation.Different from summative evaluation,formative evaluation is carried out in the teaching process,which can give better play to students’ initiative,stimulate learning interest,and be more conducive to the cultivation of English language skills.To address this situation,this study applies formative assessment to the English education in middle grade of primary school,constructs the English training mode based on formative assessment,and explores the use of formative assessment to improve the English education of middle grade of primary school students.In this study,100 students,who were from two classes in grade four of primary school in L County,S City,A province,were selected as the research objects.One class is the experimental class,and the other is the control class.On the basis of previous studies,the author takes the theory of multiple intelligence,constructivist learning theory and humanistic theory as the theoretical basis.According to the requirements of the new curriculum standard,this paper constructs a formative assessment based English training mode for middle grade of primary school students.The teaching is implemented in the five dimensions of listening and motion,speaking and singing,playing and acting,reading and writing,and audio-visual.The experiment lasted for one semester from September 7,2020 to January 22,2021.Before the experiment,the two classes were tested,investigated and observed.The experimental class adopts the formative assessment based English language skills training mode,while the control class adopts the traditional summative assessment based teaching mode.After a semester,tests,questionnaire survey and classroom observation were conducted again.Then the data obtained before and after the experiment were compared and analyzed.The data analysis results show that the students in the experimental group are better than the control group in questionnaire survey,classroom observation and tests.The results mean that the construction of formative assessment based English language skills training mode in middle grade of primary school has obvious effect,which is conducive to improving English language skills in middle grade of primary school students.This study constructs a formative assessment based English training model for middle grade of primary school students and its application in practical teaching,enriches the middle grade of primary school English language skills training teaching theory.Also,this study provides a new way for the cultivation of English language skills in primary school.Although the data accuracy in this study is limited,and there is personal subjectivity in teaching evaluation,we can conclude that formative assessment based English language skills training mode is effective,it improves the students’ learning interests and English language skills,and it has good references to other educators.
