Announce To The Public:A Study On The Political And Social Functions Of Fenbi Media In Ancient China

In the urban or rural public space,the governor always use of walls for propaganda.In ancient China,the wall media used for communication was called Fenbi(the limed wall),and the process of using Fenbi media for communication can be called Fenbi Xiaoshi(Fenbi announcement).Although the researchers of history and archaeology have been mature in the study of Fenbi,there is still a lack of attention on this important medium in the field of communication.Through the investigation of historical materials and documents,this study sorts out the types and characteristics of Fenbi,and points out the communication function of Fenbi media.In this study,the physical character of Fenbi was investigated in detail.According to the different content publishers and purposes,the media can be divided into political and social types.Among them,the decree-type Fenbi media refers to the limed walls dominated by the governor and to educate the society,while the social Fenbi media refers to the limed walls used by the public whose purpose is to enjoy expressing ideas or communication.Through the discussion of the content,shape,time and space of the powder wall,this study found that the powder wall has four characteristics:publicity,political stance,information transmission and local adaptability.After sorting out the basic characteristics of Fenbi media,this study further discusses the communication function of Fenbi media,and points out that the limed wall media has exerted an important influence on political communication,moral education,cultural communication and social supervision.In terms of political communication,Fenbi media serves the rulers,disseminates legal information to the common people and maintains social order.In the aspect of social moralization,this media can guide the social masses to form kind customs.Fenbi is also a platform for cultural communication.Ancient China rulers also created a unique system called Paimen Fenbi,which means to proclaim the law at every door.This regime demonstrated the social supervision function of the media.This study points out the commonness and characteristics of Fenbi as a media by combing the history of Fenbi,which enriches the understanding of the media and communication phenomenon with ancient Chinese characteristics.Fenbi media still exists in the current social life,and continues to play the role of defining the public space and presenting information.
