A Study On The Cultural Value Of Film Subtitles From The Perspective Of Media Archaeology

Today,movie has become a common and widely influential art form in people’s daily life,guiding the aesthetic direction of popular art.Movie subtitles are text symbols that exist in the movie screen to present and transmit information.Together with elements such as images and sounds,they assume an inescapable role in the film as a carrier of information dissemination.However,in people’s traditional concepts,the basic function and application of movie subtitles have not made the same great leap and development as images and sounds.In the research on movie subtitles,most of the research on the functionality of subtitles,subtitle form design,and visual communication,etc.But there are few systematic analyses of the cultural meaning and value presented through the subtitles.The analysis also does not cut into the case of analysis and research from the perspective of media archaeology.Based on the perspective of media archaeology,this paper extracts the interpretive biases of materiality and nonlinear narrative from the media archaeology theory and takes them as new research perspectives on movie subtitles.Combining analytical research with the methods of case study and comparative research to analyze the material texture properties of subtitles,the discontinuity and recurrence of subtitle font forms etc.,and to decipher the connotation of cultural values of movie subtitles: the material attributes of subtitles can strengthen the cognitive attributes of movies,and the quality of subtitles,and the discontinuous narratives can bring back value to old technologies and cultures.Through the case analysis of different classic movie subtitles,it is concluded that subtitles have the cultural value of awakening movie emotions,thematic contents and expressing specific cultures.Finally,conclusions and perspectives are drawn.This paper studies the cultural value of movie subtitles from the perspective of media archaeology,hoping to bring some enlightenment to the future development of movie subtitles and screen art.
