A Project Report On The E-C Translation Of Introduction Documents Of Sino-africa Vocational Education Cooperation

This report is based on the author’s E-C translation of the Introduction Documents of Sino-Africa Vocational Education Cooperation commissioned by Sunmaker Energy Ltd.based in Qingdao,China.The source text includes the introduction documents of 6 vocational colleges from East African countries and can be categorized as an informative text.Its main function is to promote vocational education cooperation between China and Africa by publicizing their own educational resources,and to seize the strategic opportunity brought about by China’s Belt and Road Initiative to vigorously develop vocational education in East Africa.The quality of the translation will directly influence the Chinese partners’ understanding of the African institutes and plays an important part in promoting the educational cooperation between China and Africa.In the pre-translation stage,the author tried to develop a thorough understanding of the client’s purpose and requirements,analyzed the features of the source text and studied some parallel texts as well as materials in the related fields.During the period of translation,based on the purpose and features of the original text,under the guidance of the Skopos Theory,the author endeavored to convey the information of the source text accurately and completely and cross over the linguistic gap between Chinese and English to achieve desired communicative effect.In the post translation stage,attentive proofreading was carried out to ensure the quality of translation and the difficulties encountered during the translation process were summarized to accumulate translation experience.After the completion of the project,the author reviewed the whole translation process and analyzed some typical cases from the following four aspects: the translation of terminologies,the translation of proper nouns,the translation of passive voice and the translation of long and complex sentences.The specific methods adopted to solve these problems can be summarized as follows:(1)Accuracy and professionalism of term translation have been achieved through using web search engines and consulting parallel texts;(2)the proper nouns are handled by adopting the translation strategy of literal translation and by employing the method of transliteration to faithfully convey the information of the source text;(3)in the process of passive sentence translation,the readability of the translated text is enhanced by converting the passive sentence into the active one and keeping the passive sentence unchanged;(4)as far as long and complex sentences are concerned,structural adjustments are carried out via division and restructuring to ensure a coherent and smooth text of Chinese.By analyzing the cases cited from the project text,this report is hoped to promote the practice and theoretical research of translating the texts similar to the project text.
