| Clement Greenberg, the most important American art critic in the 20 th century, criticizes Kant’s theory by reinterpreting Kant’s text, misreading and recreating Kant’s aesthetics in combination with his rich experience in art criticism, and constructs his own theoretical system to become Kant in the field of art.It is precisely because of Greenberg’s work that Kant has entered the vision of contemporary art. This paper uses intertextual criticism and close reading of texts as the basic research methods, following Greenberg’s footsteps, and re-taking the path that his aesthetics are constructed in interpretation.Starting from Greenberg’s most influential four-volume art review collection Art and Culture,Greenberg’s most painstaking theoretical summary Homemade Aesthetics, and Greenberg’s sensational reviews in various periods, and combined with the first-hand research materials of Greenberg’s wife and friends. This paper traced the origins of Greenberg’s theories including painting plane view, art media view, artistic internal driving force criticism, aesthetic issues and so on.What’s more, this paper expounds the innovation of Greenberg on the basis of intertextuality, peek into his unique insights on modernist art, explore its special path of organically integrating aesthetic theory and practical experience, and excavates his forward-looking aesthetics of modernity. As for Kant’s thought, this article takes Critique of Judgment as the center, and Critique of Pure Reason and Critique of Practical Reason as supplements, and makes an intertextual comparative study with Greenberg’s requisition, misreading and innovation. This article is divided into four chapters. The first chapter,"Greenberg and His Art Criticism",examines Greenberg’s growth experience, the era factors of thought formation, academic career track, early thought sources, and gives a general introduction to the main artistic views of Greenberg. The second chapter explains the process of the intertextuality theory, including its proposal, development, and evolution, finally gives the definition of "intertextuality" in this topic:this article adopts the broad concept of intertextuality from Kristeva and others--not only as a concept, but also as a critical method for practice. The third chapter uses the research method of close reading of the text to analyze in detail the intertextuality between Greenberg and Kant in terms of art and aesthetic concepts. This chapter mainly focuses on the affirmative and strengthened intertextual relationship between Greenberg and Kant. The fourth chapter presents the "intertextual negation" proposed by Kristeva in the intertextuality theory, which is also the misunderstanding thought in the intertextuality proposed by Harold Bloom. It highlights Greenberg’s recreation of Kant.Part of the content presented here is Greenberg’s view that is often criticized and misunderstood. However, this article advocates understanding the differences between the Grignard and Kant with the inclusive attitude of the intertextual theory, and strives to restore a real Greenberg objectively and comprehensively. |
