As China plays an increasingly important role in the world,Chinese culture goes abroad and enjoys great popularity.Ceramics as a significant part of Chinese culture, have been the bridge between Chinese and western culture since ancient times. In the present era when Chinese culture enters into the world, the translation of ceramics culture cannot be overlooked. The author is honored to have the chance to translate Chapter Two of Illustration of Jingdezhen Ceramics Industry Customs.Around 10,000 words are excerpted as the case study material. It elaborates on various industries of Jingdezhen ceramics production and marketing, the layout of the ceramics industry construction, the division of the labor, and guild rules and customs. It helps overseas lovers of Jingdezhen ceramics to know more about the background of the production and marketing and related culture and customs, which exerts a positive impact on the intercultural communication between the ceramics industry of China and that of the West. This project report mainly discusses the translation of ceramics culture based on the C-E translation project.Under the guidance of the text typology, the author studies the difficulties of translating ceramics industry terms, local jargon of customs, loose sentences and non-subject sentences in Chinese based on the features of ceramics text. The causes are analyzed and corresponding solutions of translation are further rendered.Conventional versions and free translation can be applied in translating ceramics industry terms while transliteration plus annotation and literal translation plus annotation can be employed in translating local jargon of customs. The translation of loose sentences in Chinese can either follow the original structure or readjust it.Non-subject sentences can be transformed with the help of passive voice and “there be” sentence pattern. The author hopes that the translating strategies and methods adopted in the project can offer some help to those who translate relative ceramics culture in the future. |
