From September 10 to 30,2019,the reporter served as a consecutive interpreter in the Seminar on Nonferrous Metal Development and Management for Developing Countries which was sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China and undertaken by the Department of Commerce of Hunan Province.During the 20-day Seminar, the major difficulties encountered by the reporter can be divided into two categories, namely linguistic factors and extralinguistic factors. The former includes unfamiliarity of terminology, information omission due to weak logic analysis capability and speakers’ accent distraction;the lack of specialized knowledge, improper handling of multi-model content and limited awareness of project situation are three subcategories for the latter.Based on Gile’s Comprehension Equation and Effort Model, plus previous studies, the reporter puts forward solutions accordingly: First, enhancing terminology preparation according to course subject, strengthening logic analysis capability and proactively summarizing speakers’ accent features are recommended to cope with linguistic factors;second, acquiring pre-existing knowledge systematically, mastering multi-model materials description rules and improving communication with parties related are valued to avoid unnecessary extralinguistic interference. With comprehensive analysis ranging from project features, difficulties to improving solutions, this report is expected to serve as a reference for interpretation practice in sci-tech scenario, nonferrous metal related projects in particular.
