A Translation Report On Memory Of Departure

This report is based on the translation practice of the 2021 Nobel Laureate in literature Abdulrazak Gurnah’s debut novel Memory of Departure,which tells the story of the protagonist Hassan’s hard life in his hometown.He went to his uncle’s house for help without success and finally became a sailor.The scope of this translation practice is the first chapter of the book,which reviews the protagonist’s childhood and lays a foundation for shaping his character.By translating a chapter of the novel,the translator comprehensively uses the results of two years of study.This report is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is the introduction,which introduces the background of the translation practice report,the description of the translation task,the translation materials,and the reasons for the selection of materials.The second chapter introduces the translation process.The third chapter describes the analytical framework of "Comprehension,Expression,and Adaptation" and explains the meaning and requirements of three aspects.The fourth chapter analyzes translation examples based on the CEA framework.The fifth chapter summarizes the whole translation practice and puts forward the outlook for future study and practice.In the translation process,the translator comprehensively uses the two-year learning results and analyzes examples in accordance with Li Changshuan’s"Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation（CEA）" framework in this report and summarizes the problems encountered in the process of translation.In terms of comprehension,this report focuses on understanding the background of the work,connecting the plot and context,and translating Swahili and Arabic words.In terms of expression,it includes adjusting the vocabulary and sentence structure to use more authentic Chinese。In terms of adaptation,it mainly discusses the translation of taboo language,the addition and simplification of information,and the "decompression"process to take into account the differences between Chinese and English languages.
