| Activity is an essential aspect of learning English.Language learners use activities to explore cultural connotations,develop a variety of strategies,understand and apply language and cultural knowledge in new contexts,and creatively express their personal intentions.General Senior High School Curriculum Standards: English(2017 Edition),with the emphasis on the cultivation of core competencies of the English subject,advocates English learning activity concept as well,which points out the new direction for English learning and teaching.In the last few years,English teachers in secondary schools have begun to consciously incorporate English learning activity concept into their teaching philosophy and awareness of cultivating students’ core competencies of the English subject in their English teaching practice.There has already been a great deal of research on English learning activity concept and activity design in academia nowadays,but little research on the current situation of implementing the concept has been done.The study on the current situation of implementing English learning activity concept in reading classes of secondary schools is beneficial to facilitate teachers’ reflections on their teaching practices,update their teaching concepts in time,and improve the efficiency of reading teaching.On the other hand,it is also useful for reference on how to further develop students’ core competencies of the English subject in English reading teaching.Consequently,it’s essential to conduct a survey and research on the current situation of the implementation of English learning activity concept in English reading teaching of junior high schools.Guided by constructivist and humanistic learning theories,this study examines the current situation of implementing English learning activity concept in reading teaching of junior high schools,taking English reading teaching in two junior high schools of Chengdu as an example.Between the two schools,one of them is a public school,and another is a private one.20 English teachers from these two junior high schools were selected as participants of the study conducted over a period of three months.This study mainly adopts questionnaires,classroom observations as well as interviews to investigate three questions below:1.What are English teachers’ understandings of and attitudes towards English learning activity concept in junior high schools?2.What is the current situation of implementing English learning activity concept in English reading teaching of junior high schools?3.What are the factors influencing the implementation of English learning activity concept in English reading teaching of junior high schools?From comprehensive analysis,this study indicates that:(1)English teachers of junior high schools highly agree on English learning activity concept,and have a basic but not deep understanding of this concept.Most teachers are not clear about how to formulate the teaching objectives guided by English learning activity concept.The deep meaning and implementation of the reading teaching activities,i.e.,learning and understanding activities,applying and practicing activities,and transferring and creating activities,are not clear to most teachers and are even unfamiliar to many of them.(2)English teachers of junior high schools have some implementation of English learning activity concept in reading teaching,but most of them unconsciously practice it and they do not have theoretical knowledge and deep understanding of it.The implementation of this concept is now mainly focused on learning and understanding activities,applying and practicing activities,and the implementation of transferring and creating activities is relatively lack.(3)The influencing factors are:First,most teachers do not have theoretical knowledge related to English learning activity concept,and they have a basic but not deep understanding of this concept.Second,junior high school English teachers lack professional guidance in the process of implementing English learning activity concept.Finally,the current teaching evaluation is score-oriented,and teachers’ actual teaching pressure is relatively high due to the fact that the actual level of students varies.As a result,teachers need support from various aspects in implementing English learning activity concept,and etc.This study answers the three questions raised.The results of this research can make English teachers reflect on their teaching practices to a certain extent,and are of great significance to promote the implementation of English learning activity concept in English teaching and improve reading teaching methods effectively.The study also concludes with some countermeasures,which are expected to provide some references for relevant research and practices. |
