Luc Tuymans, one of the most influential living painters of the late 20th century, cut a figure in the era of "painting is dead",illustrating the meaning of painting in the new era with his works.Tuymans uses documentary images for most of his painting materials. He questions the authenticity of the images and attempts to deconstruct the collective memory contained in them. For Tuymans,as for most artists of the twentieth century, painting at the level of narrative alone is uninteresting, and he is more concerned with visualizing a certain reflective content through painting,a motivation that precisely redefines the essence of painting, which is also the development of its contemporaneity. This paper combines the literature research method, the work analysis method, and the summary and induction method to provide an in-depth study of Tuymans’paintings, which is divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction, expounding the reasons for the selection of the topic, the review of relevant research at home and abroad, and the main issues to be solved in the paper,as well as the research methods and approaches; The second part introduces the background of Tuymans’ time, traces his upbringing, and explores his creative sources and veins; The third part analyzes the significance of Tuymans’ choice of documentary images, and the metaphors in the images he leads the viewer to see with the help of the uncertainty in the painting; The fourth part is an analysis of Tuymans’ artistic language, mainly from the four aspects of composition, the use of "light",the picture characteristics of the brushstrokes, and the ambiguous treatment of images; The fifth part summarizes the practical significance of Tuymans’ painting research. In short,Tuymans transforms the idea of questioning the image into a new form of painting, which is a transcendence of traditional narrative and a breakthrough in the language of painting;he seeks to explore the real world and the nature of things, which brings a multi-dimensional understanding to the viewers, presenting painting with more possibilities in contemporary development, which is also the research value of this thesis. |
