| The translation material of the practice report is from Scandinavians written by British writer Robert Ferguson in 2016.The novel consists of 15 chapters, mainly about the social development and institutional reform of Nordic countries: Norway,Sweden and Denmark. It includes the religious reform, friendship and conflicts as well as the wars between the three countries and other European countries.Scandinavian personality traits and background causes are also analyzed. The preface and chapter 3 “Amleth,Luther and the Last Priest: the Reformation in Scandinavia” are selected for translation studies. The preface is mainly the summary of the novel.Scandinavians is a historical novel, which belongs to narrative text.Clauses and passive voice are used to demonstrate the events. And there are many special nouns, involving names of people, place and war.Because it is about the history of the three Nordic countries, there are some expressions in Norwegian,Swedish and Danish. After analyzing the text types and language features,Catford’s translation shifts theory is chosen to guide the translation practice.Based on the application of the theory, level shifts and category shifts as two aspects are analyzed.Level shifts include tense shifts, single and plural shifts.Category shifts include structural shifts, class shifts, unit shifts and intra-system shifts. There are different language systems and logical structures in different languages. The specific use of translation shifts needs to be analyzed according to the specific context.Under the guidance of Catford’s translation shifts theory, the specific paragraphs are translated and researched. After the understanding of the application of translation shifts theory, the translation level and translation ability are also improved.Through the translation report, readers can improve their knowledge of history and culture, and enhance their understanding of the character of Scandinavians. It is hoped that this report will promote academic research between Chinese and foreign scholars as well as exchanges and discussions in related fields.Figure 0;Table 0;Reference 33... |
