Hesse’s works focus on the inner world of the individual self, and therefore are called "the defender of the individual soul".Based on Hesse’s unique traumatic experience, the protagonists of his novels often encounter moral and human, social and personal polarization in their lives, and this division has caused great pain to their hearts. The presentation of trauma in his novels does not only represent painful individuals, but also a microcosm of the traumatized social group. Therefore, studying the trauma narrative in his novels also has certain practical and social significance:from the perspective of personal trauma, novel creation is a process of self-fiction for Hesse, during which the pain of the author is relieved;Hesse’s novels aroused social thinking, and to a certain extent also promoted the repair of collective trauma. This thesis takes the trauma narrative in Hesse’s novels as the starting point. The full text is divided into four chapters:Chapter One summarizes the trauma themes in Hesse’s novels from three perspectives:educational trauma, emotional trauma, and war trauma.Analyze the uniqueness of its different trauma themes. The second chapter mainly presents the narrative characteristics of Hesse’s novels such as repetitiveness and fracture through the discussion of the traumatic symptoms such as dreams, hallucinations and memory fragments presented in Hesse’s novels. The third chapter analyzes the reasons for the formation of the unique multiple spaces in Hesse’s novels from three parts:the opposition between the secular world and the spiritual world in the geological space, the unique psychological space change, and the entanglement of traumatic experiences under the circle structure in the sacred space. And the relationship between such spaces and trauma narratives. The fourth chapter analyzes the meaning of "traumatic narrative in Hesse’s novels" from the two levels of the writer’s self-fiction and treatment, the bearing of collective memory and the construction of identity, and explores the deep impact of its trauma narrative.
