| Nowadays, the efforts to take Chinese culture onto the global stage thrust subtitling Chinese films and TV plays into a boom.Subtitling,as part of but a special form of translation is different from text translation, and required translators to take a comprehensive approach during the process. However, few domestic scholars have conducted subtitling research by integrating image, voice and text. This report takes a multimodal discourse analysis approach to investigating the corpora selected from the Legend of White Snake(2019),by considering the relationships between text and image, text and voice, text and action.Meanwhile, this report analyzes the role,if any, those modalities play in deciding on the meaning under disparate modal relationships, the underlying implications of the subtitles and their interactions. The study also tries to figure out the translation strategies of C-E subtitling from different modal relations, which all strive to render the expressions more effectively for the target audience and culture. This report finds that there are more enhanced text-image,text-voice and text-action relationships than non-enhanced ones.Besides, translators tend to resort to a domestication strategy for subtitling when text-image,text-voice and text-action relationships are enhanced, but to a foreignization strategy when those modalities are non-enhanced.Last,image,voice and action each play a different role in the ultimate formation of subtitles as text-image,text-voice and text-action relationships vary. |
