On The Translation Of Children’s Literature From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

This report is on the translation practice of children’s literature Shiloh by American writer Philis Reynolds Nayol.Shiloh describes a wonderful encounter between an 11-year-old boy,Marty,and a dog,Shiloh.With all of the stories one by one,Shiloh fully depicts a young boy’s heart with full of emotions through simple words.The monologue,confusion,and struggle of Marty’s heart promoted the development of the plot layer by layer.Skopos Theory,which was put forward and further developed by Hans Vermeer,a Germany translator,mainly concerns with the intended purpose.This purpose determines the translation methods and strategies that translators used.There are three rules of Skopos Theory: the Skopos rule,the coherence rule and the fidelity rule.Under the perspective of Skopos Theory,the report does systematic study on the translation of Shiloh.The report is divided into five chapters: The first chapter briefly introduces the source language text and the structure of the report.The second chapter outlines the translation process for Shiloh including the pre-translation process,the while-translation procedure and the post translation management.The third chapter introduces the theoretical framework of Skopos Theory.The fourth chapter analyzes the difficulties and solutions in case study.The last chapter concludes the author’s experience and areas for improvement in the translation of Shiloh.
