A Report On Translation Project Management Of Student Translation Team

As individual translation transforms into collaborative translation,effective translation project management has played a vital role in coordinating various resources in modern projects.The development of MTI provides more and more opportunities for student translation teams to undertake projects under the guidance of professors.Although translation project management has been extensively discussed in language service industry,compared with professional translators,student translators are inexperienced and need to take both schoolwork and practice into consideration.Therefore,it is necessary to put forward the project management fit for student teams.Based on the translation project the author engaged in,this report discusses the management process of the E-C translation of Altered Traits from the perspective of project management.In the initiating phase,the author,appointed as a project manager(PM)after passing a test,analyzed and evaluated the project content and time under the guidance of the professor.In the planning phase,10 student translators were selected to form a team,a fivemonth schedule was drawn up,and translation tools such as Word,Excel and parallel texts were chosen.In the executing phase,PM tracked the project progress timely by We Chat group and meetings,managed terminology update,dealt with problems and reported them to the professor.In the controlling phase,three revisions were arranged to control quality,which solved the problems of 15 omissions,14 typing,20 grammar,58 text comprehension and 67 language expression.In the closing phase,PM led translators to summarize the experience of translation and the gain and loss of the project.In addition,the author found some problems,including the absence of terminology database and translation memory in the planning phase,the lack of proper communication management in the executing phase,the shortage of quality management in the controlling phase,and the scarcity of language asset management and customer satisfaction survey in the closing phase.In order to solve them,the author proposed some solutions of using CAT to create terminology database and translation memory,applying online and offline communication,improving quality management,adding language asset management and customer satisfaction survey.Through reasonable project planning,project manager controlled and managed the scope,progress,quality,teamwork and communication efficiently and ensured the successful fulfillment of the project.
