Writing,as a means of output,is an important way to measure learners’ comprehensive competence to apply English.Meanwhile,the general objective of high school English curriculum is to develop students’ comprehensive language ability,and the score of writing is getting progressively higher in the reform of College Entrance Examination.So the teaching of writing is highly significant.However,the English writing of high school students in rural areas is still particularly worrying.Recitation,rather than mechanical memorization,requires students to read some useful or classic sentences,paragraphs,and articles repeatedly on the basis of comprehension,and then to recite them.Based on this,this research synthesizes Krashen’s Input Theory,Swain’s Output Theory,Robert De Keyser’s Skill Acquisition Theory,and Memetics,and applies the recitation teaching model to English writing instruction in rural high school,so as to answer the following questions:1.How does learning model recitation affect the quality of students’ writing?2.How does learning model recitation affect the development of students’ English writing ability?In this research,120 students from Class Three and Class Four,Senior Two of one school in Chaoyang,Shantou,Guangdong were studied from September 2020 to January2021.The students in the experimental class completed the recitation tasks regularly based on understanding and the recitation strategies taught by the teacher with 16 learning models distributed.In order to make sure of their initiative,the teacher first appointed the team leaders to supervise the members,and second,conducted random checks for recitation among all students every week.Before the post-test,all the students in the experimental class underwent a recitation test.Additionally,every Friday the teacher assigned a writing task on a topic similar to the learning model having been read and memorized that week.Meanwhile,the traditional teaching method was applied in the control class.Finally,the statistical analysis of the data obtained from the tests was conducted by means of SPSS 22.0.The results show that the writing scores of the students in the experimental class are generally higher than those in the control class.There is enough evidence that the students in the experimental class have enlarged their vocabulary,so more accurate sentence patterns,more logical content,and less Chinglish can be found in their compositions.The analysis of questionnaires and interviews also shows that as a result of the great performance of their writing,accordingly they have built up more confidence in English writing and showed more interest in English learning.Their cultural awareness and logical thinking have also been fostered because of a big input of cultural knowledge through recitation based on understanding.These important changes will,in turn,lead to the positive development of their writing competence.Therefore,it is concluded that learning model recitation is advantageous to high school students in rural areas in terms of their English writing performance and competence.This research is mainly to provide some enlightenment and suggestions for high school English writing instruction in rural areas under the direction of the new curriculum standards.
