In English teaching of China,vocabulary teaching has always occupied a pivotal position.However,in the current teaching classes,many English teachers still use the relatively traditional teaching method when explaining words,and still stay on the level of mechanical memory,and seldom explore the origin of words and their deep cultural connotation.Vocabulary is the basis of learning English and directly restricts the improvement of students’ abilities as well.Therefore,vocabulary teaching is still an important part of English teaching targets.There are few studies on vocabulary teaching based on etymology,so it is necessary to do further research on it.Focusing on the application of English etymology knowledge in classroom teaching,this study summarizes the related research on it in recent years.With 88 students from 2 classes in Taiyuan New Hope Bilingual School,this study attempts to investigate if using etymology-based strategy can help improve the effectiveness of teaching and the efficiency of students’ learning.First,the study designs questionnaires and interviews between teachers and students to find out the dilemma of students’ vocabulary learning and some problems existing in current vocabulary teaching in senior high school.Then,this study carries out a 15-week vocabulary teaching based on etymology strategies in the experimental class,while the control class continues to adopt the traditional teaching mode.Before and after the experiment,the vocabulary level and English paper in two classes are tested respectively,and a real statistics are collected.Through SPSS data analysis,it is shown that the vocabulary of experimental class is significantly larger,and the grades are also improved accordingly.The conclusion is that the etymology-based vocabulary teaching strategy is helpful to improve the learning efficiency of students and enhance the English comprehensive ability of the students.Finally,this study provides some suggestions in vocabulary teaching in high school English classes.
