| As a special form of translation,subtitle translation has an impact on audiences’ understanding of film and television works and plays an important role in intercultural communication.Released in 2019,the American TV series Why Women Kill tells the stories of three women betrayed by their husbands who live in the same mansion of three different eras,attracting audiences all over the world.As soon as its introduction into China,this TV series receives attention and favor among Chinese audiences,which benefits from its subtitle translation.Thus,it is necessary to research on the subtitle translation of this TV series.The adaptation theory proposed by Verschueren,a Belgian scientist of pragmatics,regards the process of language use as a process of making dynamic language choices,with the three language characteristics of variability,negotiability and adaptability,in order to achieve the expected communicative goal.In this process,there are three kinds of adaptation to relevant context,which are linguistic context adaptation,situational context adaptation and cultural context adaptation respectively.These points of view of adaptation theory are applicable to the study of subtitle translation for film and television.Based on the adaptation theory,taking the subtitle translation of Why Women Kill produced by YYe Ts subtitle translation group as the research object,combining the specific requirements of subtitle translation,this thesis builds the corpus from three dimensions of linguistic context adaptation,situational context adaptation and cultural adaptation to the subtitle translation in this TV series.By adopting the literature research method,the method of research project analysis and the discussion method,it is found that:(1)To adapt to the linguistic context,in terms of the lexical level,the translators mainly use the techniques of using four-character phrase,increasing the sense of rhythm and transformation of parts of speech;in terms of the syntactic level,the translators mainly adopt translation techniques such as addition,omission,transformation of subject,transformation of voice and the negation on translation.(2)In order to adapt to the social settings,the development of plot and the scenes of situational context,the translators adopt free translation method in most subtitle translation cases.(3)To adapt to the cultural perception,slang and folk concepts in terms of cultural context,the translators mainly use domestication strategy in the subtitle translation.During the course of this study,it is found that the subtitle translation of YYe Ts group has two main shortcomings,which are lacking of necessary explanation and ambiguity of words.According to Verschueren’s adaptation theory,the corresponding suggestions for revision are also given in this thesis.The study shows that from the perspective of adaptation theory,the translators should take the viewing experience of the target audiences as the starting point,take into account the differences between China and the West,flexibly adopt various translation strategies,methods and techniques,make adaptation to the linguistic and extra-linguistic messages carried by the subtitles,so as to overcome the communication barriers and make the target audiences get the similar viewing experience with that of the audiences of the source language.This study intends to explore the specific application of adaptation theory in subtitle translation of Why Women Kill and analyzes the translators’ way of adapting to the temporal-spatial traits,popularity and other features of subtitle translation and using various translation strategies,methods and techniques in the three dimensions of contextual adaptation to make language choices,in order to promote cross-cultural communication between China and the West.At the same time,this thesis aims at providing a brand-new theoretical perspective of the studies on Why Women Kill subtitle translation and offering a reference for the practical work of film and television translation in the future. |
