The text of this translation practice report is selected from the novel The Nickel Boys,written by an American black writer Colson Whitehead in July 2019.The background of the story is set in the era of apartheid in the middle of the 20 th century.From the perspective of the third person,it describes an abuse case happening in a juvenile reformatory in Florida concisely but thought-provokingly.It also outlines the growth process of the protagonist and highlights the theme of human dignity and redemption.It shows the characteristics of the times,and possesses many strong points such as extensive content,rigorous structure and fluent language,etc.The content of this translation practice is chosen from the third,seventh and sixteenth chapters of this novel.This translation practice is guided by Eugene A.Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory.The final translation practice report consists of four parts.Among them,the foreword is an overview of this practice.The first chapter introduces the author of the translated text,Colson Whitehead and his works,as well as the translation task and a brief analysis of the translated text.The second chapter describes the author’s translation process,including the preparation stage,the implementation stage and the revision stage.The third chapter introduces the Functional Equivalence Theory and the case analysis,including the equivalence of appearance description,language description,psychological description and cultural contents,as well as the problems encountered and their solutions.The last part is the summary of this translation practice.
