A Comparative Study On The Stylistic-register Of Pygmalion And Its Chinese Version

The stylistic-register grammar investigates the communicative function and attributes of grammar from the perspective of stylistic-register,so it is quite different from the previous studies on style,genre and register.Stylistic-register grammar refers to “the most primitive and essential language approaches and mechanism to realize the social interaction”,which is a mechanism and system to adjust the relationship and distance between the interlocutors in communication by language forms.The research on stylistic-register grammar is now at the developing stage.Although there are a lot of case studies based on the stylistic grammar theory,further research extended to other fields can also be explored,and which is the part goal of this paper.Under the framework of the stylistic-register grammar,the present study makes a comparative analysis on the stylistic-register of Pygmalion and its Chinese version,aiming at investigating different grammatical approaches of the realization of stylistic-register function.Firstly,the four elements of stylistic-register identification are analyzed on the basis of the selected text.Secondly,the grammatical approaches are investigated from the perspective of lexical and syntactic to explore the realization mechanism of different stylistic-register functions.It draws the conclusion that: 1.The four elements of the stylistic-register identification are not isolated,but the final stylistic-register representation is depended on element takes the leading position in their combination,which is situation-depended.2.Grammatical approaches for stylistic-register opposition are language-specific.Bernard Shaw mainly made use of grammatical errors,change of syntactic structure and change of the average sentence length to achieve different stylistic-register functions.Yang utilized the approaches of dialects,differences of monosyllabic and disyllabic verbs and verb reduplication.Some new insights can be discovered for the analysis of literary appreciation and translation study based on the research related to the stylistic-register theory.One can make a comparative analysis of the characters’ speech in the literary works and explore the language forms used by people from different social classes,for achieving the corresponding stylistic-register functions.From the perspective of translation equivalence,translators can evaluate the quality of their own translation based on the equivalence of the four elements of stylistic-register identification.
