Representation Of Fiction Stylistic Features From The Perspective Of Register Theory

This translation practice report takes the translation of the fiction The Man-Eater of Malgudi(excerpts)as an example to study the representation of fiction stylistic features from the perspective of register theory.The Man-Eater of Malgudi is a fiction written by Indian English writer R.K.Narayan.The translation materials of this paper are selected from Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 of the fiction.This fiction takes place mainly in the small town Malgudi.In a plain and humorous tone,the author of the fiction tells various kinds of conflicts between the protagonist Nataraj and Vasu,the boss of tea-shop Muthu,and the bus conductor.All of the figures have different characters and features.This fiction has a rich plot,with strong ethnic characteristics.Through the translation and analysis of the fiction text,this paper proves the feasibility of representation of fiction stylistic features from the perspective of register theory.Register theory is one of the most important theories of Systemic Functional Grammar.In language situations,field,tenor and mode have a direct and significant impact on the types of language produced.That is to say,we can carry out a concrete analysis from these three aspects,so as to realize the representation of fiction stylistic features.In this translation report,Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 of this Indian English fiction The Man-Eater of Malgudi are translated into Chinese with case studies,in the hope of providing reference for the understanding of the fiction and register theory as well as the translation of the fiction stylistic features.
