| China’s aim to play a leading role in the theory, technology and application of Artificial Intelligence, becoming the world’s major artificial intelligence innovation center by 2030 makes it necessary to exchange information with the world,in which interpreting plays a key role. This report is based on a mock consecutive interpretation practice of the 2019 Stanford Human-Centered AI Symposium under the guidance of Relevance. The author explores the selection and use of interpreting strategies by reviewing the whole practice process, and hopes to contribute to the global exchange of AI.This report is guided by the Relevance Theory put forward by Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson. From the perspective of Relevance Theory, the communicative process of language can be divided into two rounds of ostensive-inferential process among speakers, interpreters and listeners, and interpreters play different roles in the two rounds of ostensive-inferential process, which provides a theoretical basis for the interpreter to choose interpreting strategies. In the first round of ostensive-inferential process,in order to solve the problem of fast speech rate and numerous terminologies, the anticipation and syntactic linearity strategy were adopted,so as to reduce the efforts to achieve better contextual effect and the optimal relevance. In the second round of ostensive-inferential process,in order to solve the problem of unclear notes, complicated source language and unclear logical expression, strategies like omission, explanation, addition, explicitation and fuzzy interpretation were applied according to the audiences’ language habits and knowledge background,so as to provide the audience with the target language requiring their less processing effort and with great contextual effect. The findings of this report are as follows: First,Relevance Theory,as a theoretical guide, provides an approach for the interpreter.Based on the different roles played by the interpreter in the two rounds of ostensive-inferential process, the interpreting strategies can be selected more flexible, which helps to improve the quality of interpretation.Second,Relevance Theory also plays an important role in pre-interpretation preparation. The interpreter needs to master as much background information and professional knowledge as possible to establish a cognitive context consistent with discourse.Third, the material of this practice is novel and exploratory, and there are not enough authoritative references in China regarding the terminologies of AI.At the same time, due to the significance of knowledge popularization of this symposium, the audience not only includes students majored in relevance disciplines, experts and scholars, but also includes AI enthusiasts. Therefore, the explanation strategy can be adopted to explain the difficult terminologies while taking into account the accuracy.Fourth, this material includes speeches by four experts, each with different speaking habits and speech styles. Therefore, appropriate interpreting strategies needs to be chosen, such as omission and explicitation.Fifth, the information intention and the communicative intention needed to be conveyed in the interpretation site not only includes the speaker’ s language communication, but also includes the speaker’ s behavior. It can improve the connection between discourse and behavior through addition strategy, which helps the audience better receive the content that the speaker wants to convey.Through this practice, the author has accumulated valuable experience, which will help her to complete the interpretation work in the future, hoping to provide some reference for the interpretation research in the field of AI as well. |
