| The Belt and Road Initiative(BRI)development provides an opportunity for tourism cooperation and cultural exchange between China and Rome,Italy.Furthermore,translation,as a bridge for world communication,plays an increasingly prominent role.It helps people understand the other culture to accelerate the mutual communication and integration of the cultural diversity worldwide.Guided by George Steiner’s hermeneutics translation theory,this paper was written on the translation of the travelogue As the Romans Do(Excerpts).The author of the book named Alan Epstein,he depicts the delights,dramas,and daily diversions of life in Rome and introduced the Mediterranean culture to readers.This paper discusses the critical problems in the English-Chinese translation practice of the travelogue and explores the solutions to those problems under the hermeneutics translation theory.Thus,guided by George Steiner’s hermeneutics translation theory,this paper adopts the strategies with domestication and foreignization and methods such as addition and omission to improve the translation version.In the process of the English-Chinese translation practice,the author follows the fourfold hermeneutics motion.Firstly,the author trusts the translation material As the Romans Do and believes that the book has the value of promoting cultural exchange.Besides,the author’s linguistic and cultural competence are also part of the trust.Secondly,the author invades proper nouns,Italian words and long and complicated sentences in the travelogue to accurately understand the source text.Thirdly,after the aggression,the author incorporates the source text’s content and form and expresses it with appropriate translation strategies.Finally,the author compensates the language and culture of the translation to balance the source language and the target language.And this paper,taking the first four chapters for instance,is going to analyse the English-Chinese translation process of the travelogue from the perspective of George Steiner’s fourfold hermeneutics motion,namely trust,aggression,incorporation and compensation.The report finds that(1)the colorful contents and astonishing deep thoughts reflected from the book As the Romans Do are worth studying and facilitating cultural exchanges;(2)the hermeneutics translation theory plays an important role in guiding travelogue text translation and the four motions are indispensable;(3)it is critical to make adequate preparations before translation since translating travelogue text requires translators to obtain higher linguistic and cultural competency.After this translation practice,the author has obtained valuable translation experience and has a deeper understanding of travelogue’s translation methods.At the same time,this paper also hopes to provide some feasible suggestions for translators who are translating travelogue works. |
