| Beauty painting is one of the most important and well-known painting theme in Ukiyo-e.The stable social environment,prosperous economy and culture,and the transformation of popular aesthetic taste in the Edo period made beauty paintings popular throughout Japan.Kitagawa Utamaro is the most accomplished beauty master who was active in the world of ukiyo-e painting at the end of the 18 th century.The new style of beauty painting he created-"ōkubi-e," draws the full-length portraits of the characters closer and intercepts them,focuses on the upper body busts,and focuses on the facial expressions and psychological characteristics of the characters.This artistic innovation broke the previous unchanging painting style and pushed the Ukiyo-e beauty painting to its unprecedented peak.This article starts with an overview of the beauty paintings in Ukiyo-e,and conducts a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of Kitagawa Utamaro’s works,then summarizes its artistic characteristics,and finally summarizes his inspiration and influence on the author’s graduation creation.There are three chapters in this article.The first chapter sorts out the development history of Ukiyo-e beauty painting,then briefly describes the relationship between Kitagawa Utamaro and beauty painting,and outlines his outstanding artistic achievements.The second chapter analyzes the painting characteristics and expression forms of Kitagawa Utamaro’s works in different periods from the four aspects of subject matter,composition,modeling,and decoration.The third chapter briefly introduces the author’s reference and application of his artistic characteristics in graduation creation from the three aspects of linear modeling,decorative colors,and theatrical plot combining Kitagawa Utamaro’s paintings. |
