| The 2020 US presidential election is a major political event of the year, which is closely watched by many countries around the world. In mid-September,the Pew Research Center released a study entitled Political Divides,Conspiracy Theories and Divergent News Sources Heading into 2020 Election, which investigates the relationship between American media and the election by surveying Americans’ reading habits related to election news.Apart from personal interest, the novel research perspective prompts the translator to select it as translation material. The selected research report has the following three main characteristics: firstly,it is objective, which uses a large amount of survey data to make an in-depth analysis of Americans’ news reading habits.Secondly,it features a number of specialized terms in politics and media.Thirdly,it is of great instructive significance. The text aims to remind people to be critical when reading news since different Party affiliation and news sources may lead to Americans’ different perceptions of the election campaign. In view of the above features, the translator summarized the difficulties in translation practice, such as translation of inanimate subject and long complex sentences. Then the translator offered the solutions to these translation problems with specific cases, such as subject conversion, splitting long and complex sentences.Meanwhile, the translator tried to figure out the problem-how to guarantee as much information as possible and save reading time.Considering the characteristics of media research reports and what readers need, the translator employed some variation techniques proposed by Huang Zhonglian’s Translation Variation Theory, like addition, deletion and integration,to offer qualified translation and provide some idea for translating and trans-editing lengthy media research reports. |
