As a quintessence of Shakespeare’s tragedies as well as the great epitome brilliantly shining in literature history,Hamlet has reverberated through centuries with its lasting popularity and remains the focus of myriad scholarly elucidations and insights, which inevitably follows the fact that there is no lack of savors on it.Consequently, there are an abundant amount of researches and findings on Hamlet since its inception. The scope of research is also extremely wide and extensive, which has been beset with historical-biographical approaches, philosophical analysis, and psychoanalytic research to feminist research, and subsequently to pragmatic analysis and perspective of cognitive linguistics in the realm of linguistics, among which the thematic researches upon hesitation of Hamlet’s revenge rank at the highest amount. All in all, there is no shortage of detailed works pertaining to Hamlet.Combing through the existing research findings and results, the discussion on the spheres of space in Hamlet is minimal. As the fundamental dimension of existence and a strategic conceptual framework in literature as well as a dominant element in drama, the importance of space is self-evident.When it comes to Hamlet, space makes a big difference in the characterization of personae, theme construction, ideology representation, and deductive reasoning. With Henri Lefebvre’s spatial triad as the main basis, this thesis intends to probe into the power sovereignty in Hamlet and excavate deeply into the tragic course and endings of characters in the spatial triad, following the main line of Hamlet’s revenge action and its circuitous carrying-out along the revengeful way.Construing from the perspective of Lefebvre’s spatial triad, the power sovereignty,a typical and ever-lasting factor in tragedy designated in the spatial triad, and the depiction of the tragic destiny of characters in Hamlet are vivified, which reveals that what leading to the inevitable tragic courses and endings of different characters lies in the disintegration of power construction in the spatial triad. The thesis consists of five parts. The introduction part concisely introduces Shakespeare and his masterpiece Hamlet, briefly sorts out the relevant research findings and results, and gives an explanation of the theoretical foundation of the thesis. The first chapter mainly explores the physical space in the play, discusses the power sovereignty denoted in the physical space and the role of physical spatial elements in the construction of the tragic theme, and analyzes the construction and collapse of power sovereignty in the outward and inward space respectively, which reveals the characters’ power dilemma in the suffocating atmosphere--claiming power sovereignty on the one hand while letting it fall into a foreigner’s hand on the other due to the foreshadowing decadence of space like the bedroom. The second chapter interprets the psychological space reflected in the discourses and utterances of the main characters in the play and goes deep into the imagination and experimentation of the concealed power and desire in the psychological space from the discourses. As a perennial theme in Shakespeare’s plays, love is penetrated in the course of revenge action in Hamlet, while the worldly desire for power hasn’t been spared out of the process of revenge when giving scrutiny to the psychological space and the discourses of the main characters. The third chapter starts from the social space which is connected and produced by various relations and interprets the tragic courses and fates of the characters in the play due to the social hierarchical division of labor and the destiny of voiceless women under the patriarchy of the social space. The conclusion part reaches the conclusion and reiterates the argument of the thesis, namely the tragic courses and tragic endings of different characters in Hamlet stem from the disintegration of power construction in the spatial triad.
