English writing is a manifestation of thinking. The differences of thinking mode between Chinese and English have a great influence on English writings of high school students. After learning English compositions of the past five years in National College Entrance Examination, the author concludes that all the compositions in the past five years are required in the form of letters. However,Chinese thinking mode in the writing influences Chinese students, therefore it is common to read "Chinglish" in their writings, which causes serious obstacles in cross-cultural communication. Thus firstly, the author studies some domestic and foreign researches on the differences in Chinese and Western thinking modes, analyzes their differences, and concludes the reasons for such differences. The author discusses the differences of the thinking mode from three aspects, including spiral and linear thinking, holistic and analytical thinking, subjective thinking and objective thinking. And then, the author continues to study the domestic and foreign researches about the impact of different Chinese and Western thinking modes on letter writings, learning what impacts the differences of thinking mode have on all aspects of writing. Many students often use the Chinese way of writing in their written expressions, and the compositions they write are not authentic either in terms of words or chapters, which can not be understood by people with Western thinking mode. The author requests two classes of senior year students to write an English invitation letter, and collects different problems in their compositions from three aspects:diction, syntax and discourse. In terms of diction,it lists misuse of nouns, adjectives, verbs, prepositions, articles, etc.,and then it analyzes the reasons for the mistakes, the negative effects of the differences between Chinese and Western thinking mode in terms of vocabulary as well. After analyzing the words, the author summarizes the syntactic errors according to the students’ writings. The errors are concluded in simple sentences, compound sentences, special sentence patterns, etc. This paper discusses the effect of the differences between Chinese and Western thinking modes on English syntax from three aspects.By summarizing the common mistakes made by students at the beginning, development and end of the passage, the author studies the different influences and differences caused by the differences between Chinese and English thinking mode. Therefore, the author concludes that in high school, students must be taught about the differences between Chinese and Western thinking modes.Teachers in high school should stress the reasons for the differences of Chinese and Western thinking modes.Teachers in high school should provide authentic English readings into their class to improve students’ ability of English letter writing. In short, after the discussion of the differences between Chinese and Western ways of thinking, teachers will have a deeper understanding of the problems existing in students’ English letter writing, which will provide some inspiration and help for the future teaching practice of English letter writing.
