The teaching of writing has long been the most important and difficult task in the high school English teaching.As a teacher in high school,the writer designs her writing lessons mainly in regard of the writing requirements of the NMET.Reviewing the past exam papers,it is evident that letter writing has become the dominant writing style in the NMET.Therefore,letter writing is the main concern for the writer when dealing with English writing.However,students who vary a lot in writing ability fail to get the specific training they need to improve their writing,which leads to their poor performance in writing and lack of confidence.Aiming to the change this situation,the writer decides to apply graded teaching,which is theoretically based on the principle of teaching in accordance with their aptitudes,Mastery Learning theory and the Zone of proximal development to English letter writing teaching to prove if graded teaching can improve the students' writing ability,form students' good habits and increase their confidence in English letter writing.To confirm the effect of graded teaching method,the writing chose two of her classes and carried out a 3 months experiment during which graded teaching method was adopted in one class while the traditional teaching method was still used in the other one.The students in the experiment class are divided into 3 levels——ABC,which is based on their performance in class and achievements in the tests.In order to attain the expected result,the writer has to lay much emphasis on the gradation of lesson planning and teaching objectives before class.During the teaching process,the students are instructed with different learning methods so as to maximum their learning efficiency.Also,the gradation of assignments and teaching assessment are attached great importance.To ensure the effect of the experiment,questionnaires?writing tests and interviews are carried out before and after the experiment.From the detailed comparison and analysis of the collected data,it shows that graded teaching help the students find the suitable writing techniques and promote the communication between the teacher and the students,which improves students' ability in letter writing and arouse their interest in letter writing.In this way,the students rid themselves of the pale face to letter writing and confidence gradually builds up.As to the teachers,graded teaching enhances their professional abilities to make their lessons more efficient.To sum up,graded teaching is beneficial to both the students and teachers,which deserves further study high school teachers.
