Traditional English classes are often teacher-centered and students only accept knowledge passively.Practices in class are just mechanical exercises in most cases,which cannot arouse students’ enthusiasm for English study.Over time,students’ interest in learning English will be greatly weakened.The English level of most students in secondary vocational school is very poor.Students are not interested in English and unwilling to speak English or participate in classroom activities.English teachers in secondary vocational schools must work hard to try out new ways so that students can fall in love with English.Drama in Education(DIE)is a kind of teaching method that uses drama as a tool to educate.In recent years,people have gradually realized the charm of Drama in Education and began to integrate it with subject knowledge.Many English teachers from elementary,junior and senior high schools try to apply DIE to their classes,but there is almost no research on application of DIE in secondary vocational school.This research attempts to solve the following problems:1.How to apply DIE to English teaching in secondary vocational school?2.What is the impact of DIE on secondary vocational students’ English learning interest?3.How does the integration of DIE into the secondary vocational English class affect students’ core literacy?This article introduces the common practice of DIE and discusses the strategies that can be used in secondary vocational English classes.The experiment adopts questionnaires,interviews,tests,and observation methods to verify how drama in education affects the students’ English learning interest in secondary vocational schools and the development of core literacy.This experiment was carried out in a secondary vocational school in Chongqing,where the author works.The experiment lasts one term.Before the experiment,author gathers the grades students got in the entrance examination and oral test,surveys and interviews the students.During the experiment,author observes students’ performance in the class.After the experiment,author gathers the grades students got in the final examination and oral test,surveys and interviews the students again.Relevant experimental results were obtained after the experiment.It turns out:(1)Drama in Education can be used in secondary vocational English classes in the following ways: Teacher guides students to adapt the text and explore some drama resources based on the elements of drama;Teacher applies appropriate drama conventions into the class based on the material and objects;After class,teacher helps students write drama and rehearse.The commonly used conventions are: Emotion Roller Coaster,News Broadcasts,Conscience Alleys,Mantle of the Experts,etc.;(2)The integration of DIE into English classes can help improve Secondary Vocational students’ learning interest in English;(3)The integration of DIE into the English classes helps to develop the English core literacy,which is mainly reflected in the students’ language communication skills and autonomous learning.
