Abstract/Summary:
The past decade has seen a boom in the Chinese film market, with a proliferation of new directors.Among these young directors, the most notable were often the genre-defying,commercial directors who were soaring at the box office. The attributes of movies are diverse. In addition to its industrial and entertainment properties, cinema also has cultural and artistic values. From this perspective,we should also pay attention to the so-called Niche Films and should not ignore their existence and value, especially their artistic and cultural value.Hao Jie is a film director who born in 1980s.Although he has only three films to his credit,he has won awards at major film festivals for these three highly artistic works, which have not been well received by domestic cinemas. It is very thought-provoking and also worthwhile to study the artistic and cultural value of Hao Jie’s films.Hao Jie’s films are almost always related to the countryside, and his focus is quite unique in that he does not focus on the usual daily life in the rural area, but rather on local anecdotes and the marginalised people in the countryside, such as bachelors, folk musicians and so on,focusing on their living conditions. The material standard of living is not Hao Jie’s focus, the spiritual world is.Hao Jie’s films are realistic, bringing the camera closer to the realities of rural life. The sensible and judicious use of lens, music and dialect is an inheritance of the historically formed realistic film style, and also an improvement and refinement of the realistic style in this new era. This article attempts to analyze Hao Jie’s Hometown Trilogy in terms of subject matter, characters, themes and audiovisuals, and to summarize the artistic style and artistic value of Hao Jie’s direction. In the context of population migration and the completion of the urbanization process, there is a certain amount of sadness and helplessness when looking back at the fading rural civilization. From this perspective, the study of Hao Jie’s films is relevant.
