With the rapid development of electrical engineering in China, the translation of relays plays an increasingly significant role in the communication of science and technology. Therefore,if the translator can accurately and smoothly translate the technical text in the field of relay,it will not only improve the translator’s translation ability, but also enrich the knowledge in the field of relay in China. The source text of this report,“Design,Modeling and Evaluation of Protective Relays for Power Systems” was published by Springer in 2016.Chapter 3 and part of Chapter 4 of this book are used as the translation material, which mainly introduces the basis of power system relaying including overcurrent, impedance, and differential protections.Nida’s functional equivalence theory serves as the guiding theory of this translation practice. The translator analyzes some problems encountered in the translation process from the perspectives of lexical, syntactic and textual level, according to the functional equivalence theory. Then, the translator uses Nida’s functional equivalence theory as the four translation principles of this translation practice and tries to solve the problems encountered in the translation process by means of non-translation + annotation, the conversation of parts of speech, the change of voice, and the adjustment of word order and so on.The translator hopes that this translation practice can improve the translator’s translation ability, and this report can provide some references for more translators who translate technical text in the field of relay.
