Solzhenitsyn is a representative Russian writer in the 20 th century. His “two-part novel”and “labor camp novel” have exerted a great influence on Russian literature. The First Circle is one of his labor camp novels. The novel describes the situation of engineer prisoners in a special prison “Malfino” in just three days. The novel is a representative work of Solzhenitsyn’s dialogical experiment. His creative use of polyphony and intertextuality in the novel makes the work present a dialogical feature, which is more valuable than the current research on the ideological connotation and political concept of Solzhenitsyn’s works.Based on Solzhenitsyn’s creative use of polyphony and intertextuality, this paper studies the dialogism in his the First Circle. This article is composed of six parts: introduction, four chapters and conclusion. The introduction part introduces the topic backdrop, domestic and foreign research, and the significance of this topic, then it discusses the relationship between the dialogue research of the First Circle and Solzhenitsyn’s research.Chapter One : “The Dialogism in the Form of the First Circle”.This chapter analyzes Solzhenitsyn’s development of polyphony from the angle of form inside the novel text.On the basis of the contraposition method of polyphonic music,Solzhenitsyn uses three story clues in parallel to narrate in the form.Secondly,he uses three perspectives of internal, external, and zero angles of focus makes the work form a multi-level counterpoint.Thirdly,He uses a variety of literary genres in his novel creation, which makes his works full of dialogue.Through the analysis and research and study of the internal narration of the novel, the dialogism in the inner form of the First Circle is embodied.Chapter Two : “The Dialogism in the Content of the First Circle”.This chapter analyzes Solzhenitsyn’s inheritance of the principle of dialogue polyphony from the perspective of the internal content of the novel text.Solzhenitsyn puts the ideological consciousness of the characters in a field of dialogue, each character is an independent individual in here, they are in dialogue and their thoughts are equal to the author’s thoughts. This is reflected in the novel for the dialogue between the characters and the dialogue between the characters and their own ideology.Through the study of the dialogue between people of different classes and the dialogue between the characters and themselves, the dialogism in the internal content of the First Circle is reflected.Chapter Three : “The Intertextuality of the First Circle and the Previous Text”.This chapter studies the intertextual relationship between the novel and other texts. The contents of the First Circle not only intersects with the author’s other works, but also forms intertextuality with the Russian classical writers’ works, the classical works in the history of foreign literature, and various theories of science and philosophy in the level of the structure of the novel, the character image and so on.Through the analysis of the intertextuality between Ivan Denisovich’s day,Cancer House,Divine Comedy,Genesis and other previous texts,it reflects the dialogism nature of the First Circle outside the works.Chapter four: “The Significance of the Dialogism of the First Circle”.This chapter explores the significance of the dialogism of the First Circle from three aspects: the promotion of humanitarianism, the choice of the path to truth, and the reflection on history.Solzhenitsyn’s dialogue setting not only reflects his exquisite artistic creation techniques, but also reflects his analysis of human nature and reflections on the history of Soviet Russia. At the same time,it also makes a prospect for the future of Russia. The conclusion of the thesis summarizes the characteristics of dialogism in the First Circle, and further explain the significance of the dialogism of the works. It is because of the inheritance and development of polyphony in the form and content of the novel, and the intertextuality of external and previous text, that the First Circle in the history of Russian literature is so important.
