| Many poets were relegated to the South in the Mid-Tang Dynasty.Liu Yuxi and Liu Zongyuan were two of the five great poets at the time. They had some very similar life experiences and relegation experiences. As two representative poets from the north,Liu Yuxi and Liu Zongyuan came to the unfamiliar southern country, faced a completely different natural environment and customs. They all have their own unique feelings.Liu Yuxi and Liu Zongyuan’s experiences directly affected their depiction and performance of the southern country, showing two different characteristics:Liu Yuxi has a keen sense of hearing, composed many unique genre poems.Liu Zongyuan pays great attention to vision, left a series of famous landscape poems. These two writing methods provide a new perspective.By describing the intuitive feeling of being in an unfamiliar environment,Liu Yuxi and Liu Zongyuan’s true experience of the South is recorded, breaking the previous literati’s general understanding of the South. On the other hand,it highlights the different mentality and survival strategies of the two poets under the similar background,so that people have a deeper grasp of their personalities. This article is mainly divided into three chapters. The first chapter uses the methods of quantitative statistics and close reading of the text to sort out the style of the South described by Liu Yuxi and Liu Zongyuan.Southern country refers to the south of Qinling Mountains and Huaihe River.Liu Yuxi and Liu Zongyuan were relegated to Huxiang and Lingnan. In Huxiang,Liu Yuxi’s poems emphasized folk customs and despised the natural environment, while Liu Zongyuan’s poems were the opposite. In Lingnan,Liu Yuxi’s emphasis on folk customs remained unchanged, and his attention to the natural environment increased.Liu Zongyuan also showed a corresponding trend of change. The focus of writing is still on natural landscapes, but attention to folk customs has increased. Both of them respectively formed two writing paths as their outstanding discoveries in the South. The second chapter focuses on genre poems and landscape poems, combined with other works, and analyzes the different sensory perception of their performance in the South through the way of classification and induction. From a series of allegorical poems created by the two before they were relegated,it can be found that Liu Yuxi’s auditory metaphor is more vivid, and Liu Zongyuan is better at portraying visual images, which causes the difference in visual and auditory performance in their poems during the relegation period.Liu Yuxi’s work concentratedly reflected his attention to the sound characteristics of the southern country, which triggered his sentiment to the north;Liu Zongyuan’s work paid more attention to the scenery around him, transforming the pictures into landscape poems,so as to relieve his suffering. The South is not only a place of aliens where they were abandoned as a guest, but also a creative source that promoted the development of poets’ literary talents and philosophical thoughts. The third chapter uses the method of comparative to comprehensively explore the characteristics and reasons of their writing.Liu Yuxi and Liu Zongyuan have similarities in the performance of the South, revealing the features of the climate, and expressing the three common sentiments of the literati in the South. There are also differences in emotional tendencies and expressions, showing the two Liu’s personality and life experience are two reasons for their different personalities and attitudes towards the South. |
