After the two world wars,the world culture has further melted.The theory of cultural progress,individualism,and the pursuit and worship of "new" advocated by modernism have been questioned and criticized in the cultural background of post-modern society.World culture is no longer the development law of linear in time,but the common existence of differences in space.Before postmodernism,art is a kind of individual centered meditation thinking on art,which has never been separated from the concept of "self".It is a kind of pure instinctive self-expression and self worship,and opposed to the modern individual art related to social history.In the post-modern era,after the political movements sweeping the world from the late 1960 s to the early 1970 s,such as the tide of learning and working in Europe,the anti Vietnam war movement in the United States,the struggle of black people for civil rights,the feminist movement and the struggle of colonial countries for national independence,the connotation and techniques of artistic expression have become more and more abundant.Art media is no longer limited to art concept and art system,but from the perspective of sociology and anthropology.Art and life are getting closer and closer to the concepts of Anthropology and sociology,while individual factors are constantly dissolving.Among them,the "individual" represented by art events in works of art is less and less.Compared with the artistic expression of personal value before the 1960 s,it is more about the expression of social phenomena and social movements,and the personal self emotion is constantly disintegrated.After Boyce put forward the theory of "everyone is an artist" and "social sculpture",art seems to have entered a dead end,and art has completely integrated into life and lost its boundaries.After the 1980 s,the "individual" in art ushered in a new opportunity.The art of various countries rediscovered the internal spirit of their own nation,and the individual got a new return and remodeling in the national spirit.Artists pay more attention to their own emotional value.From the 1990 s to today’s social background,the tide of globalization and the rise of the Internet,in today’s society,people are highly informationalized and commercialized,and they are constantly manipulated by big data and algorithms,and their ideologies converge.People no longer have privacy,everyone’s data information is controlled by the algorithm,the social division of labor is more and more detailed,and the "individual" is digested in this environment.Scientific knowledge is respected as the first knowledge,and scientific rational consciousness replaces personal emotional consciousness.The isolation of the individual in the society,the solidification of the life style,and the more indifferent society brought by science and technology,under this environment,the reawakening of the "individual" is bound to be the inevitable result of the development of art,and the "individual" must have great resistance under this kind of oppression.Artists will shout again in the collective silence,and art will finally return to individual spirituality.
