A Study Of Zhang Shenfu’s Views On Culture

After the Opium War,China was forced to open its door to foreigners.In China,under the constant invasion of foreign powers,the national crisis was deepening.Cultural crisis come with the political crisis.Facing the serious national crisis and cultural crisis,Chinese scholars started to explore the differences between Chinese and western cultures in order to think about the future of Chinese culture.Some scholars advocated "Westernization",while others held the position of cultural conservatism.Zhang Shenfu remained impartial through thinking deeply,he put forward a "dialectical comprehensive" view of culture.The proposal of Zhang Shenfu’s cultural view is closely related to his academic experience of both western and traditional Chinese studying.Chinese traditional culture,Russell’s logic analysis and Marx’s materialist dialectics constitute the theoretical basis of Zhang Shenfu’s view of culture,which provided inspiration for his view of culture in content.The "Great Objectivism" and "Specific Relativity" created by him are the philosophical basis of his cultural view.The academic experience of studying both Chinese and western cultures and the guidance of scientific theories enabled Zhang Shenfu to view Chinese and western cultures objectively.Zhang Shenfu believed that both Chinese and western cultures had their features,and the relationship between them was not incompatible.The development of world culture also depends on the mutual reference of Chinese and western cultures.Taking that view,Zhang Shenfu put forward the conception of the new culture.He believed that the Chinese and western cultures should be "re-evaluated according to the modern scientific method" and "carried out a dialectical or organic synthesis".While learning western culture,we should pay attention to its "sinicization",so that it can adapt to China’s national conditions.By these means,the ultimate integration of Chinese,western thoughts and Marxism will be achieved.The cultural view of "dialectical synthesis" proposed by Zhang Shenfu provided guidance for Zhang Dainian’s cultural view of "comprehensive innovation" in the objective of cultural construction,and also provides valuable ideological resources for our current cultural construction.
