Zhang ShengFu being as a representative liberal intellectuals in the group ofintellectuals of the May 4th movement, a Chinese prestigious philosopher and alsoone of founders of Communist Party of China, he is very worth studying. Byanalyzing his political activities before the establishment of Republic China and hisrelationship with Communist Party of China, the thesis researches his thoughts andbehaviors comprehensively and deeply to conclude the features of participation ingovernment for liberal intellectuals in Modern China.The analysis limits in 1917-1949, which was the most brilliant period in ZhangShengFU's political life. By analyzing his political activities in this period, the essayattempts to build up a gap between his thoughts and activities, which would reflect ahistorical pictures------ a hesitation between politic and scholarship for ModernChinese liberal intellectuals.As a politician of double identity, Zhang ShenFu maintain his responsibilities ofa scholar in his political career, adhere to the Chinese traditional spirit ' rather breakthan bend'. So he used the academical principles to deal with the political affairs andnever to compromise as a realistic politician, which put him in a predicamentbetween idealism and realism, scholarship and politic, also let him struggle to escapethis hesitation which finallyled to exhaust his political life.By analyzing his political activities before the establishment of Republic Chinaand his complex relationship with Communist Party of China, the thesis concludesthe important reason of the failure of Modern Chinese liberal intellectuals engagingboth in politic and scholarship and Zhang ShenFu's political tragedy ------"instinctivescholar", a lack of political techniques and skills.
