An Action Research On English Pre-reading Activities In Senior High School In Views Of Multimodality

Abstract/Summary:
Reading is an important part of English teaching and learning in senior high school.However pre-reading activity as the first step in English reading teaching,its importance may be ignored by some teachers.Therefore,this may cause students’ misunderstandings while they are reading articles.The single traditional way of teaching English reading cannot arouse students’ interest in English reading learning.However,the multimodal teaching way always uses a variety of forms such as audio,video,pictures,color to stimulate the pre-reading.As is known,the effective prereading activity not only can motivate students’ enthusiasm for learning but also stimulate their interest in reading.By the way,it also strengthens the ability of selflearning and cooperates with people.It’s good for classroom teaching.The data of the research is conducted,collected and edited by methods of questionnaire,interviewing,classroom observation and test.The objects of study are selected among 39 P.E Students in Class 9,Grade 2,Yongji S Middle School,the teaching materials are the 10 units of New Senior English For China Student’s Book5/6 published by People’s Education Press.The following questions are to be addressed:(1)Under the views of multimodality,what are the effective pre-reading activities in high school English reading?(2)How does the development of multimodal pre-reading activities affect the reading interest for art students?Multimodal pre-reading activities and reading testing are carried on eight stages,sixteen weeks.After questioning 35 students and interviewing 4 students and knowing the present situation of students’ English reading learning,the teacher arranged a reading experiment test.Then,the students are permeated with the multimodal prereading activities which is applied to the routine teaching.By comparing the two results of the tests and the results of the questionnaire survey,it has been summarized out the multimodal pre-reading activities which can improve the reading status of art students in Yongji S Middle School.It generally includes free talk method,song lyrics activity method and film and television video introduction.What’s more,it can improve the effect and quality of reading teaching and increase art students’ interest in English reading.Especially for art students taught by the author,it can not only reduce the difficulty of reading through pre-reading activities,can successfully complete the following reading tasks,but also can improve students’ interest in English reading and grades.
