Grammar takes up the core position in English teaching.Grammar exercise is an important way of helping students internalizes grammar rules.The main intermediary of senior high school English grammar teaching in China is textbooks.In China,one of the most broadly used senior English textbooks is the PEP(People’s Education Press)senior English textbooks-New Senior English for China(NSEC).The grammar exercises in the textbooks will greatly affect the results of English grammar learning.First of all,this thesis studies the grammar exercises in New Senior English for China student’s books through the methods of literature review and teaching material analysis from the aspect of grammar knowledge points,forms of grammar exercises,as well as the six facets of understanding reflected in the grammar exercises.All of the grammar exercises are statistically processed and analyzed.There are two research questions:1,What are the characteristics of grammar exercises in PEP senior English textbooks?2,Do the grammar exercises in PEP senior English textbooks cover the six facets of “Understanding”? If so,how are they reflected?Secondly,through analysis,the main findings and suggestions are:(1)The first one or two exercises in each unit are mainly responsible for presenting grammatical items.Two forms of presentation are used: direct presentation and indirect presentation.English teachers should take good use of this exercise,so that the further in-depth understanding of students is possible;(2)As for the forms of the exercises,this set of textbook covers 15 kinds of exercises.But they are not evenly distributed.Objective exercises are far more than subjective exercises,and input exercises are more than output exercises.Compilers should make the proportions more even and good exercises should be add accordingly in teaching;(3)To some extent,all of the six facets of understanding are reflected in different exercises respectively.Among them,storytelling exercises or exercises that require students to apply their own experiences advance interpretation;Exercises that enable students with a great deal of latitude in defining problem or task and realistic context-providing exercises advance application.And continue writing advances perspective.In the end,this thesis pointed out that there are some limitations of this thesis,such as the classification of exercise is not detailed enough and the analysis is not comprehensive.So the further study is needed.
