The Study On The Debate Between Buddhism And Bon During Tubo Period

the religious debate between Buddhism and Bon religion was undoubtedly one of the most important historical incidents of Tubo Period.After Buddhism being introduced to Tibet,the competition and perhaps even somewhat struggle between these two religions ran through the whole Tubo history.The main cause of it was the different political forces these two religions were attaching to.Hence the struggle between the Tsempos following Buddhism and Bon religion worshiping nobles and ministers.During the constant competition and conflicts,these two religions had also presented an inclination of integration.Yet the contradiction became more acute when the time came to Tride TsuktsanTrisong Detsen regime.Trisong Detsen managed to abolish Bon religion through the religious debate between Buddhism and Bon religion.Therefore,being one of the most crucial parts in the struggle,this debate has its necessity to be further observed and researched.Under the guidance of basic principles of Marxist philosophy,combining the research methods of history,ethnology,culturology and other subjects,this paper is written on the basis of comprehensive study and reference of the previous scholars’ research.Applying comparative method and method of textual research,using literature analysis,this paper has not only further analyzed the historical background of this debate and reasons that caused it but also verified the time,venue,participants,results and so on.Finally,it analyzes the historical significance of this debate by exploring the change of cultural values behind it.There are three chapters in total.The first chapter studies and analyzes the historical background of the religious debate between Buddhism and Bon religion by focusing on Tubo’s foreign economic strategy and domestic development on a macroscopical perspective.Following the analysis and verification of the causes,time,venue,participants,focuses and results of the the debate drawing from the“movement of history” in chapter two.The author’s personal opinion is being presented among the studies of the reasons and focuses,showing certain level of innovation.In the third chapter,the influence and historical significance of this debate are discussed.The concrete process of research started from dba’ bzhed,which is relatively closer to the original version among various hand-copied sba bzhed,combined with ancient Tibetan documents in Dunhuang,stone pillars,historical masterpieces from different eras.By conducting specific research on the religious debate between Buddhism and Bon religion during Tubo Period,this paper is expected to form a relatively comprehensive understanding towards this incident and to attract more valuable opinions to this field.Meanwhile,being an exotic culture,Buddhism developed itself by applying preconceived notions and actively adjusted itself to Tubo society which was in line with the objective law of development,presented a certain reference significance in the practical practice of actively guiding the adaptation of religion towards socialism.
