In recent years,as China’s political, military and technological power has greatly improved,a growing number of foreign media begin to cast their attention on China. The Economist,a world-famous weekly news magazine, rolled out a new column,Chaguan,in September 2018,aiming to deliver in-depth reports on the events happened within the country. Most of the articles in this column are related to politics and carry strong political prejudice. In order to hold a neutral, objective attitude, the translator prudently chose 11 articles from the column as translation materials, which are about social hot events and close to the real life of Chinese people. After careful text analysis, the translator took Lefevere’s manipulation theory as the theoretical guidance to translate the texts. This paper aims to offer domestic English learners relatively good translation for reference and help Chinese readers understand foreigners’ opinions on China’s events.Besides,it also hopes to provide information reference for the strategy-makers of China’s international publicity.Once the translation was accomplished, the translator made an analysis and summary of this translation practice.Under the guidance of manipulation theory, the translator tried to probe into the rewriting strategies of the E-C translation of Chaguan column from two aspects: manipulation of ideology and manipulation of poetics. The conclusions are as follows:(1)Translation is not a simple language conversion process,it is also influenced by ideology and poetics.(2)As there exists ideological differences between China and the western world, the translator should rewrite those parts which are not in line with the ideology of the target country so as to make the translation acceptable to target readers.(3)Given the fact that different languages and cultures embrace different poetic norms, translators should rewrite the expressions in lexical, syntactic and rhetoric aspects to cater for the expression habits and aesthetic expectation of domestic audiences.Through this translation practice, the translator believes that manipulation theory has a strong guiding role in the translation of China-related texts, and hopes that this report will provide some reference for those translators of similar texts in the future.
