A Study On The Nanyang Studies(1928-1944)

Founded in 1928,Nanyang Studies is a journal devoted to the study of nanyang published by the department of overseas culture and education of jinan university.This paper selects the parts of "nanyang" and "overseas Chinese" which are mentioned a lot to investigate,in an attempt to understand the scholars’ impression on nanyang and the "nanyang" view that such impression should convey,and based on this view,scholars’ investigation on the living conditions of overseas Chinese in nanyang and their solutions on how to improve their status.The scholars of Nanyang Studies started a new field of nanyang studies with the perspective of anti-colonialism.Scholars try to explain the importance of nanyang and its overseas Chinese to China by emphasizing the suician-vassal relationship between ancient China and nanyang,and the construction of nanyang by the overseas Chinese since modern times.Furthermore,scholars show the importance of studying nanyang to readers.From this perspective,the scholars of Nanyang Studies had a profound influence on the later domestic Nanyang Studies--they emphasized the legitimacy and rationality of the equal status of overseas Chinese in nanyang by tracing the long history of exchanges between China and nanyang and naturally transferring to the development and colonization of nanyang by overseas Chinese in modern times.Nanyang research scholar’s research results as part of a study to nanyang,jinan university,help us to understand the period of the republic of China to know situation of nanyang,nanyang research scholars and the forming and evolvement of the concept of "nanyang",in addition,also helps us to understand where the living condition of the nanyang Chinese and scholars based on the relationship between China and nanyang new prospects.
