Pragmatic presupposition is the speaker’s assumption of the context of speech, and it is also the prerequisite for discourse to carry important information.Pragmatic presupposition refers to the knowledge shared by both sides in communication, which can help them understand the intention of each other’s utterance, therefore, pragmatic presupposition plays an important role in translation. In recent years, many scholars have studied subtitle translation from different perspectives, but few have studied the strategies of handling pragmatic presupposition in subtitle translation.By adopting the method of case study and taking The Marvelous Mrs.Maisel as an example, this thesis studies the subtitle translation from the perspective of pragmatic presupposition. This research attempts to answer the following questions:1.What are the main types of pragmatic presuppositions in subtitles?2.How to deal with the pragmatic presuppositions in subtitle translation? What are some widely used strategies?3.How can translators deal with pragmatic presuppositions in subtitle translation more effectively? The findings of this research are as follows:Cultural presupposition and contextual presupposition are the major types of pragmatic presupposition in subtitle and proper translation strategies can be used to deal with pragmatic presuppositions in subtitle translation, such as free translation, annotation and literal translation with annotation. In order to deal with pragmatic presuppositions in subtitle translation more effectively, the translator must first have some cultural sensitivity and can identify pragmatic presuppositions, besides, they need to distinguish the presupposed information that can be shared by the source audience between the target audience and the information that can’t be.Then, the translator needs to adopt different processing strategies flexibly when dealing with different presupposed information. This study is intended to draw more attention to the pragmatic presupposition in translation and to provide a different perspective for the subtitle translation.
