In translation studies, translation on cultures is a hot topic, which is gaining more and more attention. However, as a newly developed branch of translation studies that is closely related with cultures, audiovisual translation does not receive enough attention in China. Surveying the present situation of audiovisual translation in China, especially subtitle translation, we may find that excellent translation and inferior translation intermingle due to the lack of systematic translation theories. Therefore, it is very necessary to borrow theories from other fields.It is known to all that language is an integral part of culture. Translation can be regard as a kind of intercultural communication. So the transference of the cultural meaning of some words or some cultural phenomena seem very important. This thesis is a tentative endeavor to investigate the transference of pragmatic presupposition concerning cultural elements in the subtitle translation. The author categorizes and analyses nine kinds of pragmatic presuppositions concerning cultural elements in the case Friends, makes a tentative study of how to transfer the pragmatic presuppositions in Friends.To construct the theoretical basis for the whole research, the thesis first introduces the development of presupposition both home and abroad, illustrates three traditional definitions of pragmatic presupposition, then the author points out that mutual knowledge or common ground of a culture, also, cultural pragmatic presupposition, is the most important element in the transference of pragmatic presuppositions in subtitle translation. Then the author briefly gives nine kinds of pragmatic presuppositions concerning cultural elements in Friends, and points out how to transfer pragmatic presuppositions to the target language audience is a problem that needs to be studied.Then the analysis of the data is carried out in three sections. In the first section, the author investigates the application of pragmatic presuppositions in Friends; the second section is a brief study of translation on presupposition, which concludes that it is easier to transfer the semantic presupposition in translation, meanwhile, how to transfer pragmatic presupposition to target language audience is a problem that needs to be further studied; the third section is the theoretical study of the transference of pragmatic presuppositions in the translation of Friends.To sum up, pragmatic presuppositions have a great value in communication. And since subtitle translation is a complex action; the translator should pay great attention to transfer the pragmatic presuppositions to the target language audience. |
