The Lingnan School of painting, emerging in Guangdong Province in modern times, was pushed to its peak by Gao Jianfu,Gao Qifeng and Chen Shuren, who were also known as the Three Great Men of Lingnan in the world.Although they are both the founders of Lingnan School of Painting, they have their own distinct creative styles and artistic characteristics.Among them, the paintings of Gao Jianfu are of great momentum and the beauty of old and fierce. His younger brother,Gao Qifeng, was good at painting eagles, lions, tigers and other animals. On the other hand,Chen Shuren’s paintings are fresh and quiet, poetic and ethereal, and pleasing to the eye.Although their creative styles are different, their ideas are closely related. In terms of painting themes, they advocated drawing materials from life and reflecting the real world in their paintings, but at the same time, they should not be divorced from the masses and should enjoy both refined and popular tastes. In terms of techniques,it advocates the integration of Chinese and Western art,and the traditional painting ideas should be retained while innovation is being made.Among them,Chen Shuren enjoyed a high reputation for his outstanding talent and patriotic feelings. He was good at painting flowers and birds, mountains and rivers, animals.Although he created fewer figure paintings, they were vivid and moving, expressing his new literati painting ideas in his later years.Chen shuren created a lot of poems, not only with the content of the picture echo and full of poetic painting, which has become one of the ways to explore his painting thoughts.Chen Shuren is very sophisticated in his pursuit of painting interest, pursuing the serenity in the artistic conception of the picture and the meaningful in the aesthetic appreciation of painting. In particular, his paintings of willow branches, kapok, four gentlemen and other subjects can best show his personal spirit and elegant style. While paying attention to sketching,he also shows his noble morality and transcendent self-expression in the pictures. This paper is mainly from the "imitation" point of view, although the concept originated in the West, but China’s modern times in the key period of the spread of Western learning to the East, many people of insight and artists actively learn Western painting theory and techniques, have more or less of the "imitation" discussion or embodiment.Among them,Chen Shuren of "Lingnan School of Painting" had a profound understanding and application of imitation both in his painting techniques and in his theoretical viewpoint.Throughout his life,Chen Shuren has never been idle in both artistic creation and political affairs. It is surprising that Chen Shuren is able to walk between the two and communicate his political ideals through art.Politics also enhanced his artistic influence, showing his artistic character and personality cultivation, which was respected and loved by all walks of life at that time.As for art,Chen Shuren always insists on cultivating his personality and expressing his opinions, which is quite different from the utilitarian purpose that Gao Jianfu expressed in his works. This is also the reason why Chen Shuren’s works make people feel happy and feel like spring breeze. The content of his paintings is never complicated and crowded, nor bright and gorgeous, but more reflects the simple and simple highlight the main body, reflects the vivid effect of artistic conception, and the ethereal sense of transcendence in form, and finally promotes the innovation of "new literati painting".This paper covers Chen Shuren’s achievements in painting, calligraphy, literature and other fields, and uses literature research method, interdisciplinary research method, image analysis method and other comparative research methods to explore the factors that establish Chen Shuren’s painting creation thought and the final established style characteristics.
