This report is based on the translation practice of The Routledge Handbook of Translation Studies and Linguistics published by Routledge in 2018.This handbook introduces the achievements of translation studies based on cases and applications of relevance theory, semiotics, stylistics and etc.,including the complementary relationship between linguistics and translation studies, the nature of language and translation, the sense-making,text analysis in speech and writing, the interaction between sociolinguistics and translation, corpus linguistics, language and interpreting in the news media,as well as the translation aided by new technologies, and the application of translation studies from the perspective of linguistics in foreign language teaching.According to the text typology theory developed by Newmark, given the functions and style of the original text, this Handbook is defined as an informative text featured by simple style, rigorous logic, complex structures and difficult sentences that are modified by different phrases and clauses. With a quantity of theoretical terminology and various forms of adverbial elements, the Handbook illustrates those theories to be discussed and analyzes related cases. In the process of translation practice, the main difficulties lie in the rendering of theoretical terms, understanding of complex sentences, reconstructing of sentence patterns in the target text.Among them, the translation of various adverbials led up to special emphasis and attention. In order to deal with them properly, they are classified into four categories,i.e.,adverbials ending with “-ly”,adverbial phrases, adverbial clauses and multiple adverbials in one sentence according to the different functions of adverbials in English and Chinese. This paper studies some typical cases of adverbials in different forms by applying “communicative translation” developed by Newmark, and translation methods such as omitting, converting and restructuring different adverbials so as to summarize the possible translation strategies and provide some valuable reference for the translation of similar texts. This report is divided into five chapters: Chapter 1 provides an overview of the project, mainly introducing its background, relative theories as well as significance;Chapter 2 describes the process of the practice, including three phases such as preparation, translation and proofreading;Chapter 3 summarizes the similarities and differences between English and Chinese adverbials in terms of definition, function and translation strategies, and bring up the relevant theoretical guidance of this translation practice;Chapter 4 mainly focuses on the typical cases of adverbials with different functions by analyzing the translation difficulties and possible solutions;Chapter 5 briefly summarizes the translation practice and points out the limitations.
