Study On Contemporary Mongolian Leather Cavings From The Perspective Of Visual Symbols

Leather carving is a three-dimensional or semi-three-dimensional leather product formed by carving and painting on vegetable tanned leather.Mongolian leather carving records Mongolian culture and customs in the form of leather carving.Contemporary Mongolian leather carvings are one of the ethnic handicrafts in Inner Mongolia,and their rich textured leather and classic patterns are presented to the public in symbolic language.This article takes Mongolian leather carvings from 2000 to 2020 as an example to analyze their visual symbols and their value.The introduction of this article is based on the author’s visit and investigation and collection of leather carvings from the Mongolian leather carving production base in Hohhot.Collect literature to explain the current research status in this field and put forward the research goals and content of this article.Point out that the innovative point of this article is the perspective of visual symbols,and define the research object of this article from the scope of time and space.The body part is divided into four chapters.The first chapter introduces the overall situation of Mongolian leather carvings,analyzes its background and current situation,The classification of contemporary Mongolian leather carvings can be divided into circular engravure,embossment and enchase in terms of form.In terms of content,they can be divided into character themes,animal themes,comprehensive scene themes and thangka themes.The second chapter explores the structural relationship of visual symbols of contemporary Mongolian leather carvings.The thesis quotes Saussure’s "signifier" and "signified" semiotic theory.Analyze the visual symbol system from the leather carving patterns,colors and leather texture of the "signifier" and the cultural connotation of the "signified".And categorize them according to the different content carried by their visual symbols.Summarize the characteristics of contemporary Mongolian leather carvings.The third chapter is from the practical value embodied by leather material and the aesthetic value of leather carving patterns.The cultural value carried by leather carvings expounds the value of contemporary Mongolian leather carvings in three aspects.Contemporary Mongolian leather carvings are widely used in daily life because of their very durable leather materials.From the perspective of the special attributes of leather carvings,they have high practical value.From the perspective of the patterns of leather carvings,contemporary Mongolian leather carvings integrate daily life and aesthetics,and present them in the public’s field of vision,in line with the concept of aesthetics of daily life.The cultural value of contemporary Mongolian leather carvings is embodied in that it is a carrier of ethnic cultural heritage,a way to enhance cultural self-confidence,and a component of ethnic cultural soft power.The fourth chapter analyzes the contemporary development of Mongolian leather carvings,points out its shortcomings such as homogeneity of works,and puts forward several development path suggestion.
