Throughout the history of the translation of Chinese literature, both historically and linguistically speaking, sinologists have played an irreplaceable role in promoting Chinese culture to go global.Patrick Hanan, with his strong English language skills and rich knowledge of Chinese history and culture, has successfully translated ten Chinese classical novels, exerting a positive influence on the dissemination and reception of Chinese literature in the West. This study,on the theoretical basis of Fairclough‘s categorization of intertextuality, explores how Hanan achieves the construction of intertextuality in his renditions of four late-Qing novels from three aspects: the selection of source texts, the decipherment of intertextual references and the representation of cultural elements. The major findings of this study are as follows:(1)Hanan‘s intertextual orientation and preference have some influences on his selection of source texts. The source texts selected by Hanan all have intertextual values, which can be found not only in the relevance between source texts, between source texts and other texts, but also in the intertextual influence of source text on the creation of other texts.(2)In the process of deciphering intertextual references,Hanan shows a distinct tendency towards ―preservation‖ strategy. An in-depth exploration of 305 intertextual references collected in the four novels reveals the fact that Hanan‘s construction of intertextuality through ―preservation‖ strategy,to a large extent, reproduces the characteristics of the source cultural elements.(3)As for the represention of the cultural intertext,Hanan adheres to the principle of being close to the source language. The flexible use of various translation techniques, such as the combination of transliteration and free translation, literal translation with annotation, has faithfully preserved the cultural connotations of the source text and achieved the intertextual construction of cultural factors in his translation.Observations from both inside and outside the texts find that Hanan highlights the intertextual values of the four late-Qing novels when constructing the intertextuality in his translation.By decoding the intertextual characteristics of Hanan‘s translation, this study provides some enlightenment for exploring the general commonalities of translation by sinologist translators as well as the overseas dissemination of Chinese literature.
